Amsterdam In A Weekend: The Only Itinerary You’ll Ever Need

Ah, Amsterdam, the city where you can soak up some serious culture by day and then spend your evenings doing, well, less cultural things. From incredible food in buzzing markets to refined galleries and lush parks, it’s a city that has something for everyone.

If you only have a weekend in Amsterdam, here are the top things we recommend if you want to spend two days living like a local.

Saturday

Refresh yourself in Oud-West & Food Hallen

Embark on your exploration by taking a leisurely stroll along the vibrant Bilderdijkstraat, a bustling street lined with uber-cool restaurants and chic boutiques. As you make your way, consider grabbing a bite to eat from the buzzy Food Hallen, or the jump straight into the market life with the tempting offerings at Ten Katemarkt.

A stroll through Vondelpark

After you’ve had a snack, take a leisurely afternoon stroll through the expansive, green Vondelpark. It’s famous for a reason - you’ll often find locals taking a short detour on their way just to spend a little time amongst the trees.

Get cultured at Van Gogh Museum

Next, If you have to go to one museum, head to the Van Gogh Museum. Renowned for housing the world's largest collection of the artist's paintings, it vividly narrates Van Gogh's life through his iconic masterpieces. It’s included in the I Amsterdam City Card if you have one, but still don’t forget to book ahead. It can book out weeks or months in advance.

Wrap up the evening with dinner & drinks

If you’re hungry after all that exploring, head to Eetcafé Schotsheuvel, one of our favourite spots to settle down for a good feed. The menu is constantly changing, so you’re bound to find something for everyone. Oh, and there are no reservations - so it’s perfect if you’re a more spontaneous traveller.

Dance into the night

Melkweg is a must-visit destination for those seeking a dynamic fusion of music, arts, and culture in the heart of Amsterdam. Renowned for its eclectic programming, this iconic venue hosts a diverse range of live performances, concerts, and events that cater to various tastes. From indie gigs to cutting-edge exhibitions and engaging club nights, Melkweg offers an immersive experience that celebrates creativity and expression.

Sunday

Jordaan brunching

Start the day at Box Sociaal for brunch. Hang out for a top-notch brunch menu, locally roasted coffee, hand-picked natural wines, creative cocktails, and local and imported beer choices. Yum!

Shopping in the Nine Streets

Now, onto the good stuff – retail therapy! Head over to the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes in Dutch) for a shopping spree in one of the city's most gorgeous areas. Whether you're scoring vintage threads at Episode, munching on cookies from the famous Het Koekemannetje, or browsing for a new piece for your home – make sure you bring a bag.

Red light by daylight

Defy nocturnal stereotypes and explore the Red Light District during the day. The historical allure of this district takes center stage, inviting visitors to explore its rich past and unique architecture. Check out the Red Light District's charming canals and centuries-old buildings, and learn about the area’s interesting past (and present).

Canal cruising

Time to wrap up your Amsterdam adventure in style. Take a guided canal tour and see the city by water. Feeling adventurous? Rent your own boat, with or without a skipper – it's the perfect way to see the city from a whole new perspective, quite literally.
