What’s On: Your Guide To Free Tulips This National Tulip Day In Amsterdam
Looking for what to do in Amsterdam? How about picking your own tulip bunches for free? Next weekend is 11th edition of National Tulip Day, an annual celebration of the new tulip season. Falling on the third Saturday of January (this year, that’s 20th January, 2024), everything kicks off in the heart of the city at Museumplein. There’ll be thousands of tulips for you to pick - all without paying a penny!
What is National Tulip Day?
Once again, this year Amsterdam’s Museumplein will be host to a huge event with the theme “Let’s Dance”. There, you’ll find 200,000 tulips carefully arranged for your chance to pick your own tulips for free.
Here are our top tips for taking home the best blooms:
Arrive early: Plan to arrive before the 1:00 PM kick-off to secure the best tulips. Early birds capture the freshest blossoms. Otherwise, wait times can span between 30-60 mins, so dress warmly!
Grab a bag: While you might be tempted to bring your own bag, you won’t be allowed to use it at this event. Don’t worry - you’ll be provided with your own biodegradable tulip bag to carry your flowers around!
Post-picking coffee break: After all the excitement, visit one of the amazing cafes nearby. Our closest coffee recommendation is Coffee District, Willemsparkweg - a popular spot with locals for a good espresso and, if you’re feeling a little peckish, maybe a cheeky little cinnamon bun too!
